01Three gates, all of which have to open
A piece of packaging becomes recycled material only if it passes three gates in sequence. It has to be collected, meaning your local authority accepts that format. It has to be sorted, meaning a materials recovery facility can identify and separate it. And there has to be somewhere for it to go, meaning a reprocessor willing to buy the resulting material.
The symbol on a pack usually addresses only the first gate, and often not even that: many recycling marks indicate that a material is technically recyclable, or that a producer has paid into a compliance scheme, rather than that the item will be collected where you live.
02The answer is local, and it changes
Household collection in the UK is organised by local authority, and what is accepted differs between neighbouring councils. Glass, plastic bottles, cans, paper and card are broadly consistent. Plastic tubes, pots and trays, film, cartons and small mixed items are not.
Government policy has been moving towards greater consistency of collections, which will reduce this variation over time. Until it does, the only accurate answer for any household is the one published by its own council, and Recycle Now provides a national locator for exactly this reason.
03Why the bathroom performs worse than the kitchen
Kitchen packaging is large, mostly single polymer, mostly uncoloured or lightly coloured, and it is already in the room where the recycling bin lives. Bathroom packaging is small, frequently mixed material, frequently coloured or metallised, and it sits next to a bin that goes to general waste.
Behaviour compounds the design problem. A great deal of recyclable bathroom packaging is thrown into the general waste bin simply because that is the bin in the room. Moving a small recycling container into the bathroom is a free intervention with a measurable effect on household recycling rates, and it costs less than any product decision in this section.
04What happens at a sorting facility
Mixed recycling passes through a sequence of separations: screens that sort by size and shape, magnets for steel, eddy current separators for aluminium, optical scanners that identify polymers by their infrared signature, and manual picking.
Two consequences follow for grooming packaging. Small items fall through screens and are lost, which is why size matters as much as material. And optical sorting depends on light reflecting off the item, which is why carbon black pigment historically caused packaging to be missed entirely and directed to residual waste.
05Contamination, and the things people get wrong
Contamination reduces the value of a collected material stream and can cause whole loads to be rejected. The common errors in a bathroom context are putting non recyclable items into recycling in the hope they will be sorted, leaving substantial product residue in containers, and including items that are hazardous to sorting staff.
Rinsing containers is generally requested, though guidance varies and excessive washing has its own water and energy cost. A quick rinse with used water is the reasonable compromise. Aerosols should be completely empty. Razor blades should never go into household recycling, and require a dedicated sharps route.
06Reading the symbols, briefly
The on pack recycling label system used in the UK is the most useful, because it indicates whether an item is widely collected, is not currently recycled, or requires a specific route. Where that appears, it is a better guide than a generic recycling triangle.
The resin identification codes inside a triangle identify a polymer, and are frequently misread as a statement that an item is recyclable. They are not. The Mobius loop indicates recyclability in principle, and a percentage inside it indicates recycled content, which is a different and more useful claim.
07Takeback schemes, and what they are for
Several retailers and manufacturers operate takeback schemes for packaging that household collection does not handle, including pumps, tubes and small components. These can genuinely close a gap, because they aggregate a material stream that kerbside collection cannot economically capture.
Two cautions apply. A takeback scheme that requires posting small items individually can consume more than it saves, and a scheme with no published information about what happens to the material is asking for trust it has not evidenced. Where a scheme is named and its route disclosed, it is a real advantage, and it is something we record in the transparency index.
08Recycling is third on the list
The waste hierarchy that underpins UK policy puts prevention first, then preparing for reuse, then recycling, then recovery, then disposal. Recycling is third, and consumer attention concentrates almost entirely on it because it is the step that involves a bin rather than a decision.
For grooming, prevention means owning fewer products and finishing them. Reuse means refill systems that are actually completed, discussed in refill systems assessed. Both sit above recycling in effect, and both are less satisfying, because neither produces the small moment of virtue that putting something in the right bin does.
09The practical list
- Check your own council's accepted list, and recheck it occasionally.
- Put a recycling container in the bathroom. This is the highest impact free change.
- Separate pumps and triggers from bottles rather than binning the whole assembly.
- Empty and rinse containers lightly; do not wash them thoroughly.
- Never put razor blades into household recycling.
- Prefer larger containers, fewer of them, and finish what you buy.
