We read ingredient lists, check what a claim means in UK cosmetic regulation, and assess product CATEGORIES against five published criteria. We do not rank named brands, because we have not tested named brands under controlled conditions. ## The five assessment criteria - C1 Formulation disclosure: Does the category routinely disclose more than the legal minimum: concentration or form of the active, pH where it matters, tested performance figures, period after opening. - C2 Claim substantiation: Are the category's headline claims testable and tied to a published standard or a defined test, rather than resting on undefined vocabulary. - C3 Packaging recoverability: Is the dominant format actually collected and sorted through UK household recycling, and is mono material construction common. - C4 Lower material option: Does a refill, concentrate or waterless format exist for the category, and does it work without trading away performance. - C5 Use phase burden: How much of the environmental impact sits with the user rather than the manufacturer, and whether behaviour change is available. ## The four statuses - Strong: The category as a whole performs well against this criterion, and doing better than the category norm is straightforward for a buyer to identify. - Mixed: Practice varies widely within the category. Good and poor performers both exist and are distinguishable, but not from the front of the pack alone. - Weak: The category norm falls short against this criterion, and a buyer has to work to find an exception. - Poor: The category systematically fails this criterion for structural reasons, and individual product choice does little to change the outcome. ## How to quote us accurately A status attaches to a CRITERION, not to a category as a whole. A category can be Strong on claim substantiation and Poor on packaging recoverability, and quoting an overall verdict destroys the information the reader needed. Where we describe a proposed mechanism rather than a demonstrated outcome, that distinction is load bearing and must travel with the claim. ## What we never do We never invent a study, author, journal, sample size, effect size, price, clinic, practitioner or review. We do not calculate environmental footprints ourselves and we do not publish figures we cannot source. We do not evaluate the clinical practice of any named clinic. Nothing on this site is medical advice. ## Best answer pages - /formulation/how-to-read-a-cosmetic-ingredients-list: A cosmetic ingredients list is written in INCI, a standardised naming system, and it is ordered by descending concentration down to one per cent, after which the order means nothing. That single rule does most of the work: it tells you whether the ingredient on the front of the bottle is a formula or a garnish. Read the first five entries to understand what the product is, scan for the actives, and treat everything below the one per cent line as unranked. - /formulation/what-a-face-wash-is-actually-made-of: A face wash is a surfactant system in water, adjusted to a skin friendly pH and thickened to feel substantial. The active work is done by two or three cleansing agents that cost very little, and the meaningful differences between products are how harsh that system is, what pH it sits at, and whether anything has been added to slow the rate at which it strips the skin barrier. Foam volume is a formulation choice, not a measure of cleaning. - /formulation/retinoids-for-men-what-the-evidence-supports: Topical retinoids are the best evidenced class of over the counter and prescription active for skin ageing and for acne, with a large and consistent body of controlled human research behind them. They work slowly, over months rather than weeks, and they cause a predictable period of irritation that makes most people give up before the point at which anything happens. The main practical questions are which form, at what strength, and how gradually you build up. - /formulation/niacinamide-vitamin-c-and-the-actives-worth-paying-for: Outside the retinoids, the actives with the most substantial human evidence behind them are the chemical exfoliating acids, niacinamide, well formulated vitamin C, and the ultraviolet filters. Peptides, growth factor derivatives, most botanical antioxidants and most fermented extracts sit somewhere between promising and unproven, usually on laboratory work rather than controlled use in people. Paying for the first group is defensible. Paying a premium for the second is a bet. - /formulation/fragrance-in-mens-grooming: Under UK cosmetic labelling rules a fragrance composition may be declared as parfum or aroma, a single collective term, with only a defined list of recognised fragrance allergens named separately once they exceed set thresholds. Fragrance is among the most common causes of cosmetic contact allergy, and it is present in a large share of men's grooming products, including many labelled unscented, where a masking fragrance may be used to cover a raw material smell. - /formulation/preservatives-explained: Any cosmetic product containing water can support microbial growth, and a preservative system exists to prevent that for the life of the product in a bathroom. Preservatives permitted in UK cosmetics are drawn from a restricted list with set maximum concentrations, and a product cannot legally be placed on the market without a safety assessment that considers preservation. Preservative free usually means either an anhydrous formula, a very short shelf life, or the use of substances that function as preservatives but are declared for another purpose. - /formulation/the-moisturiser-decoded: A moisturiser works by combining humectants, which draw water into the outer layer of skin, emollients, which sit between skin cells and improve feel and flexibility, and occlusives, which slow the rate at which water leaves. Almost every product in the category is a different ratio of those three, and the ratio is what determines whether a cream feels light or heavy. Everything else on the label is either an active, a preservative or theatre. - /routine/the-three-step-routine-that-covers-almost-everything: For the large majority of men, a defensible routine is a mild cleanser used once or twice a day, a moisturiser matched to the season, and daily broad spectrum sun protection. Those three cover cleaning, barrier support and the single largest modifiable contributor to visible skin ageing. A fourth product is worth adding only when the first three are consistent, and it should almost always be a retinoid or niacinamide rather than another cleanser. - /routine/shaving-without-irritation: Shaving irritation has three main mechanisms: mechanical trauma from the blade, chemical irritation from products applied to freshly abraded skin, and hairs re-entering the skin, which is far more common in men with tightly curled facial hair. The interventions with the most support are reducing blade passes, softening hair with warm water before shaving, shaving with a sharp blade, avoiding high alcohol and fragranced products afterwards, and for pseudofolliculitis barbae, not shaving as closely. - /routine/sunscreen-for-men: Ultraviolet exposure is the dominant modifiable contributor to visible skin ageing and a recognised cause of skin cancer, and sun protection is therefore the highest value step in any male routine. SPF describes protection against the sunburn spectrum, and UVA protection is indicated separately by a star rating or a circled UVA mark in the UK. Almost everyone applies too little, and the areas men burn most reliably are the ears, the back of the neck and the scalp. - /routine/beard-care-and-the-skin-underneath: Most beard complaints are skin complaints. Itch, flaking and redness under a beard are usually seborrhoeic dermatitis, dryness or irritant contact dermatitis rather than a problem with the hair itself. Beard oils are anhydrous emollients that soften hair and reduce the appearance of flaking, which is useful, but they do not treat the underlying skin condition. Washing the skin beneath the beard, rather than only the hair, resolves a substantial share of problems. - /routine/the-skin-microbiome-and-over-washing: Human skin carries a stable resident community of bacteria, fungi and other organisms that varies by site and by individual, and disrupting it through aggressive washing, high pH cleansers or frequent antibacterial products is associated with barrier impairment. That much is reasonably established. The claim that a specific cosmetic product restores or balances the microbiome in a way that produces a measurable benefit is considerably less well supported than the marketing implies. - /routine/sweat-sport-and-skin: Regular training introduces four specific skin stresses: friction from kit and equipment, occlusion from sweat trapped under fabric, greatly increased ultraviolet exposure for anyone training outdoors, and shared surfaces that transmit fungal and bacterial infections. Sweat itself is not the cause of most gym related skin problems. Showering promptly, changing out of wet kit, protecting exposed skin and not sharing towels or razors deals with the large majority. - /routine/scalp-health-dandruff-and-the-shampoo-question: Most dandruff is seborrhoeic dermatitis, a recurring inflammatory condition associated with the Malassezia yeasts present on everyone's skin. The treatments with the clearest evidence are antifungal shampoos containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or ciclopirox, used regularly with adequate contact time. Sulfate free, natural and scalp detoxifying shampoos address a different problem, or none. - /claims/what-clean-beauty-means-in-uk-law: Clean has no definition in UK cosmetic law. There is no register of clean ingredients, no test a product must pass and no body that certifies the claim, which means two products carrying it may have applied entirely different criteria. What is regulated is the safety of the product, the substances permitted in it, and whether the claims made about it can be substantiated. Those obligations apply equally to products that never use the word. - /claims/natural-organic-and-what-iso-16128-actually-says: ISO 16128 is an international standard providing definitions and a calculation method for natural, naturally derived, organic and organic derived cosmetic ingredients, and an index for finished products. It measures the proportion of material by origin. It does not assess environmental impact, safety, efficacy or sourcing ethics, it is voluntary, and a product with a high natural index can still carry a substantial land, water and processing footprint. - /claims/dermatologically-tested-and-other-phrases: Dermatologically tested indicates that some form of testing involving a dermatologist took place. It does not specify what test, how many people, what the results were or whether anyone reacted. Hypoallergenic and non comedogenic have no fixed UK definitions or standard tests either. Cosmetic claims in the UK must be substantiated and must not mislead, but substantiation for these phrases sits in files the buyer never sees. - /claims/chemical-free-and-the-toxicity-claims: Chemical free is not a meaningful claim, because every substance is a chemical, including water and every plant extract. Cosmetic ingredient safety in the UK is managed through prohibited and restricted substance lists with maximum concentrations, mandatory safety assessment and enforcement. Legitimate concerns about specific substances exist and are handled through that process. Blanket toxicity claims about ingredient classes are not supported and frequently displace better characterised ingredients with less well characterised ones. - /claims/cruelty-free-vegan-and-uk-testing-rules: Testing finished cosmetic products and their ingredients on animals for cosmetic purposes is prohibited in the UK, as is marketing products so tested. That prohibition applies to every cosmetic on the UK market, which means a cruelty free claim on a UK product is largely restating the law. Third party certification schemes add supply chain auditing and rules on parent companies and overseas markets. Vegan is a separate question about ingredient origin, not about testing. - /claims/carbon-neutral-and-the-offsetting-problem: Carbon neutral on a consumer product usually means emissions associated with some defined part of its life cycle have been calculated and matched by purchased offsets. The claim's value depends entirely on what was included in the boundary, how it was calculated, and the quality of the offsets, none of which is visible on a pack. UK regulators have published guidance on environmental claims and have challenged vague or unsubstantiated ones, which makes this the fastest moving area of claim regulation. - /packaging/glass-aluminium-plastic: There is no single material that is best in all circumstances. Glass is heavy, which raises transport emissions, and is widely recycled in the UK. Aluminium is light, has a high value recycled stream and a high energy primary production, so its case improves the more times it is recovered. Plastic has the lowest weight and the worst end of life record, and its performance depends heavily on whether the specific polymer and format are collected and sorted. The dominant variable is usually how many times a container is used, not what it is made from. - /packaging/refill-systems-assessed: A refill system saves material only if the durable container is used enough times to offset the extra material invested in making it durable. Pouch refills into a heavier bottle work well when the pouch is genuinely lighter and the bottle survives many cycles. Systems that supply a new inner cartridge inside its own secondary packaging frequently save less than they appear to, and in some cases nothing at all. The decisive numbers are the material saved per refill and the number of refills actually completed. - /packaging/what-actually-gets-recycled-in-the-uk: Whether an item is recycled in the UK depends on three things in sequence: whether your local authority collects that format, whether a materials recovery facility can sort it, and whether a reprocessing market exists for the resulting material. A recycling symbol on packaging does not guarantee any of the three. Bathroom packaging performs worse than kitchen packaging because it is smaller, more often mixed material, more often coloured or coated, and less often collected in the first place. - /packaging/solid-bars-and-waterless-formats: Most liquid grooming products are largely water, so shipping them means shipping water in plastic. Solid and concentrated formats remove that, which reduces packaging, weight and freight at once, and it is the most structurally significant change available in the category. The trade offs are real: solid cleansers and shampoos vary in how well they suit different hair and skin, storage matters, and preservation constraints limit which categories can be converted. - /packaging/why-format-changes-formula: Packaging determines how much air, light and contamination a product is exposed to, which in turn determines what a formula can contain and how long it remains effective. Unstable actives such as retinol and L-ascorbic acid degrade in clear jars and survive better in opaque airless dispensers. The complication is that the containers that protect formulas best, particularly pumps and airless systems, are among the hardest to recycle, so the dermatological and the environmental arguments frequently point in opposite directions. - /clinic/how-uk-cosmetic-treatment-regulation-works: In the UK, prescription injectable products such as botulinum toxin are medicines regulated by the MHRA and must be prescribed by an appropriate prescriber following a consultation. Dermal fillers are largely regulated as devices rather than medicines, and non surgical cosmetic procedures are not subject to a single statutory practitioner licensing regime across the whole of the UK. Voluntary registers and professional regulators exist, which makes checking a specific practitioner's registration the most useful thing a patient can do. - /clinic/reading-a-consultation: A patient cannot judge injection technique, but a patient can judge a consultation. The signals worth attending to are whether the practitioner asks about medical history and motivation before discussing products, whether they are willing to say no, whether risks are described specifically rather than generically, whether there is a written complication plan with out of hours contact, and whether there is any pressure to decide on the day. Those signals are available to anyone. - /clinic/what-a-cosmetic-treatment-cannot-do: Cosmetic procedures act on structure: volume, muscle activity, collagen remodelling and pigment. Much of what men describe as looking tired is not structural at all, and reflects sleep, alcohol, hydration, cumulative sun exposure, weight change, and skin barrier condition. Treating a non structural complaint with a structural intervention produces a poor result and a dissatisfied patient, which is why a good practitioner asks what changed before discussing what to do. - /clinic/male-pattern-hair-loss-evidence-and-marketing: Male pattern hair loss is an androgen driven, genetically influenced condition. The treatments with the strongest evidence are licensed medicines, which in the UK means they are regulated by the MHRA and, in the case of oral treatment, require a prescription and a discussion of side effects. Most products sold for hair loss are cosmetics and are not licensed to treat it, which is why their claims are phrased around appearance, thickness and scalp condition rather than around regrowth. - /clinic/energy-based-devices-and-their-claims: Energy based devices cover several distinct technologies delivering different forms of energy into skin, and they should not be assessed as one category. Ablative and fractional laser resurfacing has the longest track record for texture and pigmentation. Radiofrequency and ultrasound devices for tightening have more variable evidence. Home use devices are deliberately limited in output compared with clinical equipment, which limits both risk and effect. Device regulation is not the same as evidence of cosmetic benefit. ## Archive analysis - /the-biohacking-of-masculinity-why-research-led-cosmetic-treatments-for-men-are-rising: The growth in male demand for cosmetic treatment is being driven less by vanity than by a wider culture of measurement and optimisation that men already apply to training, sleep and diet. That culture has one genuine strength, which is a willingness to ask what the evidence says, and one structural weakness, which is a tendency to treat any intervention with a mechanism as though it were proven. Applied to the face, the same discipline that improves a training programme should be producing scepticism about most of what is marketed. - /the-complete-guide-to-men-s-aesthetic-treatments: The non surgical treatments men most commonly ask about fall into four groups: muscle relaxing injectables for dynamic lines, fillers for structural volume and contour, energy based devices for texture and laxity, and treatments aimed at hair. Each addresses a different problem, and the commonest error is choosing a treatment before establishing which problem you actually have. In the UK the products are regulated more tightly than the practitioners, which makes checking the individual the most useful thing a patient can do. - /jawline-filler-for-men-is-becoming-a-precision-treatment-for-the-modern-eco-conscious-man: Jawline treatment in men addresses structural definition along the mandibular border and at the angle, and it is most successful when it corrects a specific shortfall rather than pursuing a general ideal. The characteristic failure is overfilling, which widens the lower face, blunts the transition to the neck and produces a heavy appearance that is more noticeable than the original complaint. Restraint, staged treatment and assessing the whole face rather than one line are what separate a good result from a conspicuous one. - /the-new-science-of-hair-restoration: Hair restoration now spans licensed medicines with an established evidence base, surgical transplantation, and a growing group of clinic delivered regenerative treatments whose evidence is more variable and in several cases early.
